I purchased a domain name and got it 'pointed?' to a website DIY developer and hosting monthly membership site, but did not get any further with getting the domain name website built. I cancelled my monthly subscription, and now clicking on the url brings up the landing page for this membership outfit who I will not name, as it would just be traffic for them. Seeing I own the domain name, how do I get the name redirected to a new hosting service where I can hopefully build a website.

Any help appreciated. I know this will seem simple, but it's getting pretty techy for me.

Thanks  Embarrassed

hey Grambo

Your situation is not tough all.

Depending upon where you bought the domain, usually is just a matter of of going in and changing the DNS.

For instance, if you bought it at Go Daddy, which I suggest you do, all your domains that you buy there are kept in a special account under your name. So if you change hosting or whatever. You simply go in and change the DNS to the new hosting company.

Now if that sounds like a lot of Greek to you, then let's do it this way. List who you bought the domain from and I'll tell you how to proceed from there.

I will tell you this though, you are going to need hosting company. So if you don't have one yet, you need to get that first. Otherwise, you'll have nowhere to point your domain.

So let's recap:

1), you need a hosting company.
2) you point the domain at the new hosting company with the DNS they give you.
3) you're done.

Hope that helps

Hi Bruce..I mean Mike, thanks for that. Next confession of a wannabe internet marketer, I don't know where I bought the domain name from. I do remember the domain name , it is www.yourownaffiliatemillions.com , but I can't contact the present webhost called Profitmatic.com since I cancelled my monthly subscription to them.
Any ideas as to how I can track myself back from just knowing my domain name? The domain name was from a burst of enthusiasm in attempting to become an affiliate marketer of an internet product called ... you guessed it.. to do with affiliate millions, actually a Mike Cheney product. Don't know if anyone in the forum has had success with his products - I'm sure somebody has, but I basically ran into the 'Overload Syndrome'.
By the way I had a look at your health product website, very nice, did you build that yourself? Is it an affiliate setup for the main supplier?

Yes send me your hosting company link (affiliate link no doubt  Wink)
Any help appreciated
cheers john k

Hi John,

Welcome. Regarding trying locate where you registered your domain name, just google whois and pick one of the providers. They'll search the net and come up with the following information:

WHOIS information for: yourownaffiliatemillions.com:

[whois.enom.com]

Visit AboutUs.org for more information about yourownaffiliatemillions.com

You have to login to PROFITmatic since they registered your domain name and there you will change the dns to whatever new hosting company you decide to use, you may want to check out Thinkhost, http://tinyurl.com/dxzq4r yes this is an affiliate link but the cost to you is still the same 7.95/month. Also, since you domain is going to expire in June and apparently you are not satisfied with PROFITmatic you can transfer it to another domain registrar like godaddy. If you need help with any of this just send me a PM.

Good luck,

Gilberto Cintron

Thanks Giltron. My God  Shocked here I am protecting my identity with all sorts of passwords and privacy, and it's all hanging out at my domain name register. Can i give myself privacy there? Lips sealed
No offence Gilbert. And thanks for the hand-hold. This is the most effective forum I have been on, for internet marketers, not that i have been on many. But it sure beats some anonymous support desk, and I like the functions of the posts, such as being able to modify a post even after it's posted, such as a typo on my domain name, which would have made me look like a real 'twit'. Hey Grambo

There's good news and bad news for you. One of the things you never do is register a domain through your hosting company. Which you did in this case which might be a little tough getting them to turn the domain over to you. Good luck on that.

As far as protecting that your identity with your domain, when you register a domain. You are always given the choice to register it by proxy, which costs a few more dollars, but hides all your information from public view. You may or may not want to do that.

During this course, you're going to have to sign up for Aweber as an autoresponder, which will allow you to have the e-mail series go out. But they also do require that you post a address, which can be a P.O. Box or any address that you designate.

What I'm saying is that during the registration of a domain you can use that same contact information and address that you used in Aweber, whether it's a mail drop a P.O. Box or, whatever .

HuhThanks for that Brucey. This situation is one of the @#$#$@ about this game. It's knowing the small details that can be bumps in the road and such time-eaters. And once they've got your money some people don't want to know. Now I've let off some steam, let me understand this - Your domain name that you 'buy -rent'on an annual basis, has to be hosted, which you pay for on at least a monthly basis right? So I don't get how the present host could refuse me to change, if I'm all paid up ? Please explain.
I have sent an email to the support email address, so it remains to be sen if i will get reply. What would my next step be?
Thanks Mike, for your help

Hi John,

As I stated in my post above, find a domain name registrar with a good rep. like maybe Godaddy. Open an account and instead of registering a new domain name (although you can if you want to) simply transfer your domain name from PROFITmatic to Godaddy. You do not even have to deal with Profit matic, Godaddy will handle the transfer for you. In fact, the time remaining on your registration with PROFTmatic will continue on with Godaddy. Let me be clear, you are paying Godaddy to renew your domain name for another year and they will transfer your domain to them but the year you purchased from Godaddy will not begin untill after the year from PROFITmatic expires, in this case June, even thought your domain will now be on Godaddy.

I hope this makes sense.

Gil

PS a great web host is Thinkhost for $7.95 per month you get more bandwidth that you need plus all the bells and whistles. Additionally they have a multi tiered affiliate program. Earn $100.00 per referral.

hey John.

I sent you an e-mail that was listed on your profile regarding the most unbelievable deal for hosting on a first-class hosting company.

Right now, you can get hosting with C. panel with unlimited domains for $4.95 a month.

Check it out now. It won't last long, here's the link below.

Yes, crystal clear thanks Gilbert. With all the hosting companies out there, she's a real school dance. And they all want you to go out with them for 12 months yeah?

Not sure what you mean, but there are no long term contracts. Host month to month if you like.

Wen I started this 30-day challenge, 3 days ago, I became a member of a free hosting company, as a free member. They said I was up and running but I couldn't get into my site. After a bunch of messages, they kicked me out and said I wasn't worth their time, to upgrade and they would put me in contact with their technician.
I bought my domain through GoDaddy and it was easy to change it over, but I didn't do it. My son is more technical than I am, Roll Eyes
I'm now hosting under my son's account and I feel like I'm living under his roof Undecided
LOL!

If the domain name is registered to you, then Profitmatic MUST allow you to change your DNS servers! If they don't, you can complain to ICANN and they can lose their domain name registrar status.  I'm a domain name reseller under Wild West Domains, which is a subsidiary of GoDaddy.com. Those of us who are Wild West Resellers have the exact same services as GoDaddy, but we get to price our domains at what we think is appropriate. :-)  So I usually price mine at less than what GoDaddy does. That aside, I wrote an article for beginners which you might find helpful - you can find it at http://givemenames.com/beginners.html

As for hosts - that's covered in the article, but I recommend HostGator.com - I use them and am an affiliate for them but I don't believe you need to pay me for this information!  ;-)  Just go check out their offer at http://HostGator.com
Note: I DON'T recommend getting hosting from GoDaddy or my reseller site. HostGator has much better services, reliability and pricing. I've used 6 different hosting companies in my Internet journies so far, and HostGator is the best.

I'll be happy to answer any questions which you might have.
