I noticed that in a 2008 discussion there was mention that Gina recommended using CommentLuv. The new premium version of CommentLuv has just been released and I was wondering if it was still a must have plugin or had fallen into the "don't bother" category?

CommentLuv is a plugin that can actually help you get more marketers to leave comments on your blog.  While some will most certainly appear to be spam comments, when you're just starting a new blog and you don't yet have ANY comments, even a few generic comments is better than no comments at all!

Since 2/2011, Google now looks at "engagement levels" including how many comments you get, # of page views, amount of time on site/page, bounce rate, etc. to determine search engine rankings.  So anything you can do to improve the engagement level -- and get more comments -- is a good thing.
